Floating fast like a hummingbird

Finished!!!

Hello friends,

Every monday for the past few weeks i have been cotton tailing it down to Hummingbird 60, on High Street in Northcote to paint a mural in the store. HB60 specialises in pretty ladies clothing from Australian Designers such as Indigo, Sadie, Hamb, Mimosa, Piper Lane and many more. They also have a range of quirky gifts & jewellery from local designers. In short, the Kathy & Penelope Super Sister duo behind Hummingbird 60 support local designers and artists and i think that they are the bees knees.
The mural i am painting spans over three walls, and responds to Kathy and Penelope's vision to foster a Gallery for Women, where the experience of entering HB60 is akin to walking into a work of art.
My aim is to create a painting inspired by the organic and free flowing lines of artists such as Aubrey Beardsley and the Art Nouveau movement, but with a contemporary twist.
Not long until it is finished now! And i know that the Hummingbird ladies have big plans in the pipeline to exhibit their new mural and launch their new website, amongst other exciting projects in the Hummingbird 60's future.
I will post photos of the mural once it's finished but you should really duck in and check out the shop if you're ever in the hood.

My Urban Vege Patch

I have been a bad, bad blogger, i know. But i have been sooooooo busy. Busy moving house, travelling, getting hitched, hosting the in-laws, getting food poisoning, overload of work (happily). But I'm back and taking this moment to say hello.

Recently we moved house. From a sprawling old double front californian bungalow with a big back yard and ample front into a tiny terrace. It has been challenging! especially considering that up until now we have had friends staying and i have had no studio or storage!! lucky i was too busy to make art.

But now the space is finally our own - and i am in the process of setting up my studio and in good time too as this month and the next i have a couple of BIG commissions on and desperately need the space!

One of the first challenges of moving into such a small space was the realisation that our courtyard out the back doesn't receive much sunlight. i have never lived in a north facing space before. so it is our front porch that receives daylong sun (lookout summer) and our backyard that receives next to none.

Gone were our dreams of a thriving vege patch and self sufficiency! oh woe. But i am the eternal optimist (or so i keep telling myself) and i began to research urban gardening. The possibilities are endless!!!!

My friend gave me some beautiful old suitcases, and i already had a couple and so i decided to convert them into garden beds for our front porch. firstly i poked some holes through the bottom of the suitcase, making sure that i pushed the holes out so any water would be forced through it. I then lined the suitcases with plastic and poked it through the holes and taped it down. Since the suitcases are basically compressed cardboard i wanted to be sure the water doesn't touch them. Then i secured some mosquito mesh over the holes so the water could drain but i wouldn't lose any soil. I had been creating this soil for over a year and brought it from the old joint to the new. it's beautiful, beautiful soil. I raised them on bricks so that the bottom of the suitcases wouldn't biodegrade and shebang! ready for planting.

We planted cauliflower, rainbow chard, lettuce, rocket, spinach, silverbeet, basil and broccoli. From the compost in the soil has grown potatoes. They are soooo happy and it fills me with delight each night when i go outside to collect my dinner.

Now that we're into Spring here I am looking forward to planting some more yummy things like tomatoes and finding other ingenious ways to urban garden. i'm quite interested in window farming...

It has been a rather long spell since i have blogged but the drought is broke for i have something to say! autumn has hit melbourne in a rather spectacular, moody and windy way and with it lots of fun things have been going down in my neck of the woods. Susy Blue launched her album Curly Girl and it was such a joy to see her and her band bust out her special brand of cabaret folk (there was even a touch of reggae!).

Final Continent Expedition

'Teaming up with charity Bicycles for Humanity, Hap and his Final Continent Expedition team are raising the twelve thousand dollars needed to send a sea container of disused bikes to a village in southern Africa. Upon arrival, the container will be transformed into a bike workshop, not only supplying bikes to orphans and aid workers, but becoming a self-sustainable business run by locals, for locals. Hap and the FCE team will work with Bicycle Empowerment Network Namibia to implement the workshop and train locals to maintain the business.'

Hills Hoist + May Pole = Belinda Suzette

Recently I was commissioned to transform a rather large and clunky Hills Hoist plonked unceremoniously smack bang in the middle of the clients' backyard. They were having a party and short of ripping the aussie icon out, they didn't know what to do with it...I DID!! the theme of their event was 'Tree Of Life'. I have always wanted to create a Maypole and the symbolism of it and the Tree Of Life are intrinsically connected.
The idea i came up with was an ephemeral sculpture that celebrates the beautiful fractal, geometric, kaleidoscopic shapes and planes of the structure. Using ALOT of ribbon I wrapped the trunk and weaved a geometry of balance and colour.

The onus was on colour, light, symmetry and joy.

The Maypole tradition is a part of the rejoicing at the return of summer, and the growth of new vegetation. It marks the end of the winter half of the year, early May in the northern hemisphere, early November in the southern. Since the event was held in early November, the timing was perfect. The symbolism of the Maypole is of the Germanic reverence for sacred trees, as there is evidence for various sacred trees and wooden pillars that were venerated by the pagans across much of Germanic Europe, including Thor's Oak and the Irminsul. It is also known that, in Norse paganism, which is the best attested form of Germanic paganism, cosmological views held that the universe was a world tree, known as Yggdrasil.

Originally a Germanic Pagan tradition of Iron Age and early Mediaeval cultures, the Maypole ritual survived Christianisation, albeit losing most of it's original meaning. It has been a recorded practice in many parts of Europe throughout the Mediaeval and Early Modern periods, although became less popular in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Today, the tradition is still observed in some parts of Europe and amongst European communities in North America, and now Down Under!

Evolution for the ARTence Project

I went away to the country side last weekend, and stayed in a stone cottage built in 1850.
The back part of the building was semi underground so that the windows were ground level.
It reminded me of how much I want to one day live both underground and in the trees. So I devoted today to drawing a little dream village.

A little while ago, i was invited to be apart of the ARTence project. ARTence is a web exhibition of artworks, about the importance of scientific and technological research and its main themes. I thought that today's drawing would be apt.

The event is intended to raise awareness on how research can contribute to improve life and society, promoting values as environmental conservation, sustainability, innovation, development.

I have big opinions on town planning, as evident in many of my drawings. welcome to my village.

Weekend Woman

Donkey's ears ago i wrote a wee country ditty called 'weekend woman' complete with kick and twang.
then years later (which is still years ago) it turned into a sad love-sick song and gained a few pounds. even now when i listen to it, or sing it, it reminds me of how sad i was.
Incredibly Glaswegian band Fireside Kicks saw it on youtube and want to cover it! AMAZING! i CANNOT wait to hear what they do with it!!!!

A few years ago I was riding a rickety chicken bus into the Chiapas Highlands, Mexico on my way to San Cristóbal de las Casas for Dios De Muertos. Our bus was held up by Bandidos. I learnt that San Cristóbal was the headquarters for Marcos and the Freedom Fighters, and that they were known to take foreigners hostage to help receive media coverage in their plight against oppression. I sneakily took this photo through the window. And this is where my love and interest in the Zapatista movement began.

it's spring time here in my beautiful valley and a gang of rare black cockatoos have decided to visit.

they have been shredding out trees in search of grubs, they're a mad mob. screeching like prehistoric beasts through our spring skies.

the grasses here sometimes make me sneeze. that and the camphor balls mum puts in the cupboards to protect the woollen goods. here's me fusing sensibilities....

My heart is on top of a hill in a valley called Piggabeen on the skirts of a hinterland snug in the wake of a volcano in the borderlands of nsw and qld, australia. where the bush meets the beach. this is my stomping ground, an ideal childhood spent swimming in the waterhole, splashing about in creeks with bursted banks when the big wet sets in. there's just something about all that mud. boogies boards and flooded paddocks. swinging on ropes, lying in the snake ridden grass watching storms roll out to sea, waking to the dawn chorus of thousands of birds welcoming in the day. i'm here at the moment. and i'm loving sharing this home with galahs and cockatoos, kookaburras and rosellas, lorikeets and magpies, geese and pacific black ducks, fairy wrens and finches, native pigeons and spoonbills, cranes and the lone jabiru who makes an appearance in the valley once in blue moon. i've been feeling very inspired. i love returning here. time stands still.

Spring is my favourite season down under. The grass is green, not yet burnt by summer. the sun is warm but the wind is cool. I'm all inspired and so i set about making clouds and rain drops.
I love the rain. My childhood is full of High Summer ultra marine blue skies, heat that you can hold in your hand, and wild storms that race in from the hinterland, violently dance for a spell before streaking out to sea. then blue sky again. I grew up in the bush in a house with a tin roof. Rain is music. By the end of summer our tanks would be empty and the plants would be thirsty and the wallabies would come down from the hills to our water hole. My sister and mum and i would do rain dances. When it rained it rained and we would rejoice! my sister and i would pray for flood. we'd grab our boogie boards, meet up with the other kids in the valley, and surf the waves of the busted banks of the creek.

All made from reclaimed, recycled, pre-loved, hand-made, vintage, fairly-traded, much-loved, keenly-sought materials. Each is unique.

You can find them at the next Suitcase Rummage, this coming Sunday the 5th September in Brisbane at King George Square.

Today was deliciously wet and woolly.
I had stuff to do, a couple of commissions to work on, flights to book, bills to pay, etc etc.
But do you know what i did? i drew pictures.
found my soft pastels. set up by the heater. and drew drew drew.

A new illustration.
I'm not sure where this dude came from.
he just appeared in front of me.
earlier this year i was diagnosed with ciguatera poisoning, from eating fish.
since then i have had a very sad relationship with fish.
the fish was poisoned because our reefs are so polluted.
now i am poisoned. i'm surviving but the fish is dead.
if only i hadn't eaten that fish!
i diverge: i still don't know where this dude came from but his feet are stuck in stone.

Here is a project that I am a part of called Silo.

Silo is a collection of contemporary illustration and design from a community of new professionals based in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia.

Part art-book and part self-promotion, Silo was conceived to shine a spotlight on some of Australia’s most exciting and diverse young Illustrators, and introduce their work to a wider audience.

United against mediocrity, Silo strives to explore unexpected illustration from a broad range of styles and genres, from children’s books illustration, contemporary comic book publishing through to editorial illustration, typography and design.

Our goal is to introduce the industry, both national and international, from publishing houses, editors and other potential clients and collaborators to eclectic and innovative illustration , as exhibited in the first edition of Silo.
